4 upcoming neighborhouds in amsterdam - inter immo

4 upcoming neighborhoods in Amsterdam

As of 2024, the city of Amsterdam boasts more than 110 neighborhoods. Some of them more well-known than others. De Pijp, Jordaan and the Canal Belt for example, are amongst those popular with expats and tourists. Though, outside of the vibrant atmospheres of the city center and its direct outskirts, a bunch of new neighborhoods are rising in popularity. Offering an alternative – often more affordable – settling location for expats. Here are the top 4 upcoming neighborhoods in Amsterdam, according to the experts from Inter Immo.

1. Buitenveldert

On the brinks of southern Amsterdam is Buitenveldert. It is known for its abudance in greenery, with the Amstelpark and Amsterdamse Bos within walking distance. The neighbourhood itself is known as family-friendly residential area and stands in the shadows of proximate academic institutions like the VU University Medical Center and the Amsterdam International Community School. It’s most recent addition? The renewed Gelderplein, an indoor shopping center with over 90 stores, catering young and old.

2. Slotervaart

Late last year, the Amsterdam West district secured a spot in the coveted Top 10 of the Time Out ranking of the Coolest Cities worldwide, and not without reason. The largest neighborhood in Nieuw-West is Slotervaart, described by local residents as “family-friendly” and “culturally diverse”. It is home to a bunch of upcoming foodspots, coffee bars, and heated terraces to satisfy your craving for a late-night drink, year-round. Despite recent upgrades, housing prices in the area have not surged drastically, contrary to other Amsterdam neighborhoods.

3. Amsterdam Noord

A ferry ride across the IJ brings you to Amsterdam Noord. The originally largely industrial north of the city is rising rapidly in popularity. With an up-and-coming creative scene and a large variety of cultural experiences it has enough to offer for a wide range of demographics. The IJ-hallen for example, which is the biggest flea market in Europe or the adjacent NDSM-werf, a former shipyard turned creative hub and festival terrain.

4. Diemen

Technically we’re tapping just outside the brinks of the city with this one. Diemen – it’s own municipality – is located just southeast of Amsterdam. It is surrounded by scenic greenery, including the Diemerbos and Diemerpolder, making it easy to escape the vibrance of Amsterdam over the weekend, with a long walk, bike ride or picnic. It’s local city centre also offers a fine selection of dining and cultural experiences. A suitable settling location for young families, serving as a gateway to dynamic Amsterdam while maintaining its own charm and character.

Bonus tip: Look beyond Amsterdam

Amsterdam is of course not the sole destination in The Netherlands. The admittedly small country actually has a lot more to offer. Besides, although some neighborhoods still offer affordable housing options, prices have skyrocketed throughout the capital. Therefore it might be a consideration to look beyond its borders. Almere for example, a fast-growing city just northeast of Amsterdam. The suburb has a growing expat community and lively city center, on just a 20 to 30 minutes train ride from the Amsterdam Central Station. Larger cities along the southwest coast like Rotterdam and The Hague, which are metropoles in itself, can also be an attractive option for expats.
